Our history – from 1869 to today

The very beginning
In 1869, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), originally known as Merchants’ Bank of Halifax, was incorporated in Nova Scotia.

1901 – a bond-focused start

RBC Wealth Management’s early business was established in Toronto. The business focused on underwriting and distributing government and municipal bonds – and began to expand leading up to the First World War.

1910 – crossing the pond

RBC’s international expansion gathers pace with the opening of an office in London.

1929 – forming the RBC Art Collection

From modest beginnings, the collection now includes over 5,000 works – with pieces housed in RBC offices in the British Isles, Canada and the U.S.

Today, RBC’s arts programme spans a number of global partnerships and initiatives focused on supporting the next generation of artists.

1962 to 1973

1962 – growth into the Channel Islands
RBC extends its regional footprint into Jersey, at the time, a fledgling but growing finance centre.

1973 – further growth
Major global financial institutions make a mark in Guernsey, including RBC.

2005 to 2016

2005 – bolstering our strength
RBC acquires Abacus, a leading international financial services group with roots in the British Isles.

2016 – a new home in Jersey
RBC further demonstrates its commitment to Jersey by relocating to new waterfront offices at Gaspé House.

2021 – better together in London

RBC moved the Capital Markets, Wealth Management and Investor and Treasury Services businesses to the iconic and highly sustainable new building at 100 Bishopsgate – the largest building by volume in the Square Mile.

2022 – a new acquisition

Royal Bank of Canada acquires Brewin Dolphin, the start of the journey to create a combined wealth business in the UK and Ireland.

Today – helping clients thrive and communities prosper

We serve the wealth management needs of more than 800,000 clients in the British Isles, Canada, the U.S. and Asia with client assets exceeding C$1.3 trillion.

We look for opportunities to lend our time, talent and resources to inspire positive change.
